Spotlight: Tape-In Extensions

Tape-ins have become one of the most popular types of extensions.  They provide a ton of fullness and length, and are a great way to “try out” adding a new color without permanently changing your natural hair.  If you’re interested in wearing hair extensions full time, tape-ins are a great place to start!

With an extended variety of shades, including balayage and rooted shades, the color match will be perfect.  Tape-ins are available from 13” to 25” to give you the fullest hair of your dreams at any length! As with all of our extensions, a haircut will be scheduled with your application appointments to blend the length of your hair seamlessly!

Application Appointments

The first appointment will start with a clarifying shampoo and blow dry to get your hair the cleanest it’s ever been! This will help the tape adhere to the hair, which is expertly placed by our stylists, who are all certified in HairTalk Tape-In Extensions. HairTalk provides only 100% Remy hair (the best) in a variety of shades, lengths, and widths necessary to tailor each extensions experience for every client’s needs.

We will give you all the styling tips for at-home maintenance so that you can get the most out of your new hair.  With proper care, you’ll be ready for us to move up your extensions after 6-8 weeks. Your tape-ins can last up to 3 applications, which is about 6 months!

At Home Maintenance

The cardinal rule for all extensions is keep it detangled, and the most important thing about tape-in extensions is protecting the adhesive at your roots!

Before shampooing your hair, detangle it by holding your hair in ponytail sections away from your face & gently brushing the ends first. Once your ends are detangled, you can brush the middle & higher sections. Ask your stylist about our HairTalk extensions brush to keep your hair intact and tangle-free!

To preserve the adhesive, keep products that contain oils (like conditioner) or alcohol (hairspray) away from your roots.  When using conditioner or hairsprays, apply them on the middle and end-sections of your hair.

After showering, detangle your ends, apply heat-protecting and styling products on your mid-section and ends, and blow dry your hair before it air dries. This keeps your hair detangled to prevent matting! (If you rely heavily on air-drying your hair, beaded weft extensions would be a better fit for you. Check out our post here for more!)

You can do so much more with fuller, longer hair! Give us a call at 919-845-0998 to schedule a consultation with your stylist – our hours are:

Customizing the Lived-In Color Trend with Wella Color Expert Whitney Parr

  • Whitney’s model, center, with Katie and Whitney

Whitney Parr, a Wella Color Expert Certified stylist and educator recently shared her expertise in custom color formulations with our advanced stylists. Whitney’s forte is to formulate color based on each guest’s lifestyle – are they chasing their children all day or working in a corporate office? Are they swimmers or are they restorative yoga instructors? Do they love coming in the salon for their appointments every 6 weeks or prefer to come once per season? All these factors play into Whitney’s plan for them, and our stylists practice a similar consultation to bring each of our guests a tailored experience.

Our advanced stylists were able to get a sneak preview of Wella’s New Liquid Toners, formulated to provide a perfect finish to your preferred shade of blonde. The Brass Kicker additive notably neutralizes warmth, while the intermixable toners enhance blondes who range from warm (honey-beige) to cool tones (sterling silver).

Customization is so important in building our relationship with our guests, which is why we host educators like Whitney Parr who specialize in creating a bespoke color experience for each person in our chair .

Master Stylists and Mentors Alley + Katie Hone Coaching Skills in NYC Workshop

Education Team Members Alley Biehl and Katie Purshce took part in the world-renowned 2-day workshop, “Fierce Conversations” in New York City at the acclaimed Bb.U in Manhattan. Based on Susan Scott’s best-selling book Fierce Conversations, the workshop provides a detailed road map for building a stronger team.

Instructors pushed attendees to expand their communication techniques to have conversations focused on passion, integrity and authenticity. The class examined the importance of productive coaching conversations being intelligent, productive discussions that build on and strengthen the culture of our salon.

As a mentor and coach, Fierce Conversations helped me get in the right mindset for focusing conversations on solutions rather than issues at hand. Our culture of feedback is so important to us and knowing how to better cultivate an environment of openness will help me lead my team!

Oribe Global Educator Gardner Edmunds

Gardner Edmunds and stylist Katie Pursche

Oribe global educator and celebrity stylist Gardner Edmunds was on-hand at Samuel Cole Salon to share his cutting expertise in a class featuring the Unstructured Bob. This hairstyle is perfect for women with finer textures and those who want a classic textured, tousled look with minimal structure. It’s a style seen worn by Julianne Hough, Kate Hudson, and Lucy Hale.

The unstructured bob provides a great frame for eyes and cheekbones, and adds softness to the person’s overall style. During the class, Gardner emphasized creating texture and movement with a razor. Stylist were inspired by his visual,  free-style approach, giving a very sexy, undone look to the bob – a traditionally a very geometric cut.  This technique creates a fresh, modern take on a very classic look.

This is one of my favorite haircuts and I loved Gardner’s refreshing take on it. Using a razor gives clients the wispy ends they love without making their hair look thin. It’s the best!

Insta-Educator Nikki Kepley @Craft_and_Mane Visits Samuel Cole

Nikki Kepley started her career in hair here at Samuel Cole Salon, before moving home to Greensboro, NC where she accepts clients at Local Honey Salon, and where she shifted her Instagram focus to share her curly hair journey with others.

Growing up, Nikki always straightened her curly hair, but after having two children she wanted a daily hair routine that was a little more manageable. She researched and practiced (a lot) and learned how to style her curls and ultimately fell in love with them! Her passion has becoming sharing everything she’s learned from how to style on “wash day” to be able to “recycle” her curls for several days before having to shampoo and style all over again! Nikki shared with us her wealth of knowledge, and having her perspective as someone who’s styling her own curly hair daily is invaluable.

Her key advice for any curly women on getting their hair cut: if you wear your hair curly some days and straight other days, get your hair cut while it’s straight. You’ll need some layers, but it will look good both straight and curly. A “curly cut” – styling your hair curly before getting it cut – is best for those who wear their hair curly 95% of the time.

I loved this class so much because it expanded my visual cutting skills and allowed me to tap into my background in sculpture. This technique relies so heavily on shaping hair based on the naturally styled curl pattern and texture.
