Throwback to Vintage Hollywood Glam with Robert Vasquez

Inspired by Rita Hayworth’s characters in 1940’s and 50’s films, Robert Vasquez, like his mentor and hair stylist superstar Garren, often reinvents the Vintage Hollywood Glam style.  Vasquez demonstrated the parting and curl direction that recreates this look and featured R+Co products that bring the curls to life with volume and long-lasting hold.

Dallas Thickening Spray volumizes hair, holds heat-styled looks, and prevents moisture loss; Grid Structural Hold Setting Spray blocks humidity and holds shape so the style lasts longer; Foil Frizz + Static Control Spray tames flyaways and frizz while adding shine, eliminating static, adding shine and providing heat protection; Outer Space Flexible Hair Spray’s memory allows the stylist to brush through a set style, knowing it will go back into place.

I loved this look! Vintage retro styles are so on-trend.  The curl techniques Robert shared were awesome and I really love learning alternative ways of doing things.” – Sam Smith

Wella Master Colorist Coco Kootsillas Launches 2018 Spring + Summer Color Trends

Carla “Coco” Kootsillas is known for her master color formulations and combining her color expertise with modern cutting and styling techniques.  She is always ahead of the trends and will be competing in the mega-brand’s yearly styling and coloring North American Competition, TrendVision 2018!

Coco’s philosophy is to treat hair as another one of your accessories and that it should match your lifestyle.  Spring and Summer 2018 styles feature warm and soft colors, like peaches and roses, and everything is bright and light.  These trends are showing up in today’s popular makeup palettes, using peachy tones and highlighters to create a radiant glow.  Styles are not gender-specific, men are growing long hair and women are wearing short cuts that do not require precise styling and are sporting “boy brows” – embracing and grooming full eyebrows instead of wearing them pencil thin like we saw in the 1990’s.

We see these trends mirrored in hair color and styling; brighter highlights frame the face while keeping a natural root color at the crown and in the back.  Monotone color with very slight variations in highlights and low lights rather than a drastic contrast between highlights and lowlights.  Blondes will see tones of champagne, honey, vanilla, and coconut milk, making their blonde really pop and feel blonder.  Brunettes’ face frame with tones of soft copper, toffee, dark caramel, and amber.

Coco has a unique blend of technical and creative artistry.  She has the extraordinary ability to incorporate runway trends into everyday wear – her classes always give me extra focus and inspiration in creating a color that reflects my client’s individual style.” – Stylist Carmella Williamson

Master Stylist + Formal Styling Expert Alley Biehl Demonstrates 2018’s Romantic Bridal Styles

Soft, romantic and tousled looks continue into 2018, as brides are opting for loose romantic looks that capture the casual elegance of today’s formal trends.  Alley Biehl’s styling class demonstrated foundational styling skills in creating the ultra feminine bride.  Soft curls and whimsical braids update the classic up-do, creating the 2018 “Textured Up-do.”  Side-swept, half-up-dos feature a twist or braid alongside cascading curls that for the look of a bridal goddess.  Wispy tendrils compliment 2018’s version of a chignon bun, it’s luxurious yet relaxed.

Alley demonstrated how to pin and style the hair to create a soft and textured, loose up-do that would be secure enough to hold all day and night.” – Stylist Katie Pursche

Michael + Kristen Experience Advanced Bb.U Master Class with Industry Icon Tom Gallagher

Stylists Michael and Kristen attended a Master Cutting Class at industry-renowned Bumble and bumble University in New York City’s Meatpacking District.  The class instructed participants to use the culmination of skills they have mastered at previous Bb.U classes and in their careers behind the chair.  Instructors Tom Gallagher, William Paul and Josie Searles demonstrated haircuts using techniques that challenged stylists to take a new visual approach.  As experienced stylists, Michael and Kristen value the opportunity to be challenged to the edge of their comfort zone – and beyond – in a safe space with coaches giving individual feedback.

Michael and Kristen especially love soaking in the history in Bumble and bumble’s academy.  The halls are filled with the editorial designs of Bumble and bumble’s team since the late 1970s.  Learning from industry-leading instructors and being surrounded by Bumble’s history in the hair industry inspires stylists to expand their comfort zones in hair cutting and styling.  Bb.U’s location in the fun and trendy meatpacking district adds to the artistic experience, and their panoramic windows invite inspiration from the natural light and bustling New York City environment into the creative atmosphere.

Baxter of California Global Educator Josh Velazquez Leads Master Men’s Grooming Class

Baxter of California creates carefully curated products that allow men to express their individual signature statement.  Creating a signature look is critical since “Men’s Grooming” is a growing trend, and men are asking for more custom styles to reflect their individuality.  Baxter Global Educator Josh Velazquez shared several techniques to expand our stylists’ range of skills regarding men’s cutting and styling. Samuel Cole Salon’s education has kept stylists’ skills on the forefront of new trends for men.

Velazquez demonstrated a short, textured crop haircut that can be styled polished for a formal evening with Baxter’s Hard Water Pomade or textured for a casual day watching the game with their Clay Effect Style Spray.  Velazquez also demonstrated a taper cut with a short, precise fade – perfect for gentlemen who like to maintain a clean, consistent look.

Josh’s instruction was extremely informative, especially in his demonstration of the close fade. He thoroughly walked us through his thought process from the first trim to the last finishing detail of the look.  He also gave us alternative uses for some of Baxter’s most popular products, like using the Grooming Cream as a beard conditioner!” – Stylist Carmella Williamson
